Cape Town viewed from a treetop walkway

first_img22 May 2014A 130-metre treetop canopy walkway, winding through the forest canopy on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain and offering spectacular 360-degree views of the city and mountainside, has opened at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town.Taking advantage of the sloping ground, the crescent-shaped, galvanised steel and timber structure winds and dips through the forest canopy, resembling the ribbed skeleton of a huge snake – hence its nickname, the “Boomslang” (Tree Snake).Rising in places to over 11.5 metres above the ground, the wheelchair-friendly walkway gives visitors the opportunity to experience the forest from above, and to see birds and other animals that are normally difficult to spot from ground level.Kirstenbosch horticulturist Adam Harrower describes how “one can experience tree dynamics – how the treetops move in the wind and how the crowns of the trees interact with one another.“The walkway then bursts through and above the canopy, giving you an impression of what it is like to be above the forest. At this point, the walkway provides spectacular 360-degree vistas comprising Cape Town and the surrounding majestic mountain slopes.”The structure was designed by architects Mark Thomas and Christopher Bisset, and built at a cost of around R5-million – funded entirely from bequests – to mark Kirstenbosch’s centenary.Established in 1913, Kirstenbosch was the first botanical garden in the world to be devoted to a country’s indigenous flora. Displaying a wide variety of the unique plant life of the Cape Flora, known as fynbos, as well as plants from all the diverse regions of southern Africa, it has over 7 000 species in cultivation, including many rare and threatened species. The 36-hectare garden is part of a 528-hectare nature reserve bordering Table Mountain National Park and lying at the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, which was declared World Heritage Site by Unesco in 2004.SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Can Swimming Pools Be Green?

first_img Start Free Trial Already a member? Log in Sign up for a free trial and get instant access to this article as well as GBA’s complete library of premium articles and construction details. Question: What do the following homes have in common?Answer: All of these green homes have swimming pools. That shouldn’t come as a big surprise, since residential swimming pools are increasingly common in North America. Back in 1950, there were only 2,500 private residential pools in the U.S.; now there are over 7 million of them.Although residential pools no longer raise eyebrows, they nevertheless deserve the scrutiny of the green building community. Let’s be frank: swimming pools are energy and water hogs.In homes with swimming pools, more energy is used to run the pool pump than anything else except the heating system and air conditioner. In fact, the typical California pool uses enough electricity during the summer season to power the average home for three months. One study that looked at pool-pump energy use was conducted by Danny Parker, a senior researcher at the Florida Solar Energy Center. Parker monitored energy use at 204 Florida homes, 24% of which had swimming pools. On average, the pool pumps used 4,200 kWh per year. (For comparison, the average monitored home used 5,695 kWh per year for air conditioning and 2,227 kWh for water heating.)According to one source, homes with swimming pools use 58% more water than homes without pools. Another source reports that pool-equipped homes use twice as much water for outdoor uses as pool-free homes. The typical backyard swimming pool holds 16,000 to 20,000 gallons of water. Pool evaporation amounts to 3 to 7 feet of water per year. For a 15 by 30 foot pool, the range is 10,000 to 23,000 gallons per year for evaporation, plus about 25% to account for splashing. If the pool is filled once a year, it requires about 38,000 gallons of water every year.Residential water use varies from state to state, ranging from about 60 to 110 gallons per person per day — equal to 21,900… center_img This article is only available to GBA Prime Memberslast_img read more

Provisions of electricity opens opportunities for communities – Energy Minister

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp #Jamaica, August 22, 2017 – Montego Bay – Minister of Science, Energy and Technology, Dr. the Hon. Andrew Wheatley, says the provision of electricity in communities which were previously without the service forms part of the Government’s push to create economic opportunities for everyone.Addressing a National Energy Solutions Limited (NESol) ceremony to officially commission electricity service to the Park Lee and Ridge Pen communities in Mountainside, South West St. Elizabeth, on August 18, Dr.   Wheatley said getting electricity to the community should also be viewed as mission accomplished, following a commitment he made to the residents early last year.“By bringing electricity here, we are opening the doors and providing opportunities for the people,” the Minister said.He encouraged the residents who will benefit from the electricity to remember the responsibilities which come with the service.   “It is not free…it comes with responsibility, so I encourage you to be responsible and to practise energy conservation,” he said.    He told the residents that following representation from Member of Parliament for South West St. Elizabeth, Hon. Floyd Green, a community access point (CAP) will soon be opened in the area. This, the Minister said, is part of the Ministry’s push to get Jamaica on the information superhighway as the country works to attain its Vision 2030 developmental goals.“The community access point is to ensure that we build out a knowledge-based society − a truly digital society − so that Jamaica can embrace the opportunities that are presented as the economy grows.   We do not want South West St. Elizabeth to be left behind,” he said.“We want to create opportunities for young people, such as skills in animation and app development.   Even in the farming communities, you will be able to use technology,” the Minister added.Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament said the installation of electricity in the communities forms part of efforts to restore hope for the residents.“This is part of the reason why I went into politics…to make the lives of people better.   There is a lot more work to be done and we are going to ensure that we go community by community and look at the critical issues and treat with them.   In this modern-day Jamaica, you must have road, water and light that you can turn on. It is now a necessity,” Mr. Green said. Also addressing the ceremony was Mayor of Black River and Councillor for the Mountainside Division of the St. Elizabeth Municipal Corporation, Derrick Sangster, who said residents of the communities are really happy that the service is being made available to them. Some 150 households in the Park Lee and Ridge Pen communities will benefit from the electricity service. Volvo Trucks electric and autonomous Vera gets its first job

first_img Share your voice The Iron Knight is the coolest Volvo you’ll never be able to buy Now playing: Watch this: Tags 2020 Volvo XC90 first drive: An improvement worth subscribing to 3:01 More From Roadshow Volvo Trucks has been working on a self-driving platform that could be used in drayage. Drayage is the industry term for short-haul trucking, typically from a ship to a rail hub or a nearby warehouse. The project is called Vera, and it’s essentially a brain, some motors, batteries and no provision for a human driver. It’s a little odd-looking, but that hasn’t stopped it from getting a job in Volvo’s home town of Gothenburg, which the company announced on Thursday. These drayage drives are repetitive and short, making them ideal for today’s autonomous vehicle technology that still has trouble dealing with the kind of complexity that most average consumers would see on, say, a drive to work.Enlarge ImageVolvo’s Vera will save tons of money and pollution by taking both combustion engines and human drivers out of the equation for short-haul trucking. Volvo Trucks Volvo’s electric Vera is then ideally situated to make its trip from a logistics center to the port at Gothenburg over and over again with minimal human interaction while also significantly reducing the environmental impact of the shipping process.Cool, right?”Now we have the opportunity to implement Vera in an ideal setting and further develop her potential for other similar operations,” says Mikael Karlsson, vice president of autonomous solutions at Volvo Trucks. The pilot program will use several Vera trucks that will be monitored remotely from a control tower to make sure that they don’t do anything untoward while on the road. Having multiple vehicles means that they can be swapped in and out as they need to be charged.Volvo Trucks doesn’t have an official start date for Vera yet, but it’s likely that there needs to be a bit more development and ironing out of kinks before it can hit the roads. People getting fruits of development says Hasina

first_imgPrime minister Sheikh HasinaPrime minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday said people will bring Awami League back to power as, she argued, they are enjoying the benefits of development due to the continuation of her government.“People are enjoying the benefits of development as there is the continuation of the government,” she said. The prime minister said this when leaders and activists of Swechchhasebak League met her at Ganobhaban on the occasion of the founding anniversary of their organisation.Recalling the ‘atrocities’ of BNP-Jamaat clique during the last general election, Sheikh Hasina said this evil force had tried its best to foil the polls. “The country’s people will resist their such heinous design in the future and bring Awami League to power again.”The prime minister mentioned that today the world does not see Bangladesh in merciful eyes rather they see it in the eyes of dignity. She asked the leaders and activists of Swechchhasebak League to do politics with a sacrificing mentality as Bangabandhu did.“You have to do politics habouring the attitude of sacrifice like Bangabandhu…you must always think about how much you’re able to give to the country and its people,” Hasina said. She said Awami League’s politics always goes to one direction – ensuring the welfare of people as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.“I’ll tell you that those who’ll do politics with the mentality of sacrifice will be able to have a dignified place in people’s hearts, and that’s the highest reward for a politician in his or her life,” she said. The prime minister said politicians have two aims – one what he or she can do for people and another how one can change one’s fate with public wealth. She asked the Swechchhasebak League leaders and workers to choose the first one as their political philosophy. The prime minister also directed its leaders and workers to play their active role in strengthening Bangladesh Awami League to materialise the dreams and aspirations of people.Highlighting the long struggle, life and works of Bangabandhu for establishing an independent country, Hasina said he dreamt of building a poverty- and hunger-free Bangladesh through ensuring the economic emancipation of people. She said usurpers began the politics of killing, coup and conspiracy after killing Bangabandhu and they pushed the country backwards by making anti-liberation forces and war criminals part of state power.Hasina also urged people to pray for her son—eminent IT expert Sazeeb Wazed Joy—on the occasion of his birthday on Thursday. She also shared her bitter experience as an expecting mother during the Liberation War as she along with other members of the family had been under house arrest at Dhanmondi.Earlier, Bangladesh Swechchhasebak League Central Committee and its Dhaka City North and South Unit presented bouquets to the prime minister.Swechchhasebak League president Adv Molla M Abu Kawsar and general secretary Pankaj Debnath also spoke on the occasion.last_img read more
